THEODORE ROOSEVELT
The President cannot attend the dedication of the McKinley Memorial Organ.
Typed Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt" as 26th U.S. President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1908 December 11. To Rev. John Wesley Hill, 131 West 118th Street, New York City. In full: "I regret that I can not be present with you on the occasion of the dedication of the McKinley Memorial Organ. With all good wishes for the success of the occasion, believe me, Sincerely yours." It is ironic that a musical instrument would be named in memory of President William McKinley, who was assassinated in the Temple of Music at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1901. THEODORE ROOSEVELT, who had succeeded McKinley and completed the three and a half years left in McKinley's term, was elected to a full four-year term in 1904 but decided not to run for reelection in 1908. He supported his Secretary of War, William H. Taft, who was elected 27th President on November 3, 1908, five and a half weeks before Roosevelt wrote this letter. Slightly shaded at areas and at signature. "4" penned in unidentified hand at upper right. Lightly creased at edges and at mid-horizontal fold. Encapsulated. Fine condition.
