ULYSSES S. GRANT
Ulysses S. Grant signs an autograph endorsement.
Autograph Endorsement signed: "U.S. Grant/Maj. Gen", docket on a 3½x7¾ mid-panel of a 9¾x7¾ integral sheet. (Vicksburg, Mississippi), 1863 August 4. In full: "Referred to Col. Bingham. If the Gwisbeck is unable to run from any fault of the officers of the boat deduction should be made from the charter for the time so lost." Written on the verso of the concluding half-page of a 1½ page ALS: "Geo. W. Graham" to Grant penned on board the steamer J.H. Gwisbeck, Vicksburg, 1863 August 4. Graham acknowledges an order from Grant "to send this Steamer to Hains Bluff at once" but tells him that the "Captain, Engineers & Pilot were sent down to Port Hudson with Genl Herron's Command...a number of our Engineers and Pilots are sick...consequently it requires considerable trouble to keep the boats going. My object in writing this letter is simply to have her remain here, until the crew returns...." One month earlier, Vicksburg was surrendered to General Grant. Grant's endorsement is written on a toned panel. The left and right panels have mounting and tape remnants and there are glue remnants at the blank edge of the panel. A hole is also at the upper blank edge. A 6-inch slit at the right margin of Grant's panel touches 6 letters (all paper intact). Graham's letter is lightly soiled with horizontal fold at the tops of the letters.
