ULYSSES S. GRANT. ALS: "U.S. Grant", 1¼p, 5x8, front and verso. Head-Quarters Armies of the United States, 1866 October 19. To Messrs Spencer & Thurman. In full: "Enclosed please find check for $121.51, the amount of bill for clothing just rec'd. I ordered at the time my measurement was taken two white vests which did not come. I will now get them in this City. You need not therefore send them. I return by express Gen. Butterfield's clothing. Gen. Butterfield is on duty in New York City." On July 26, 1866, GRANT was commissioned General of the Army, the first American to hold that distinction since George Washington. His postwar duties included overseeing Indian Affairs and protection of the transcontinental railroad workers in the West and the enforcement of Reconstruction policies in the South. Although he had doubts about President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policies, Grant accompanied the President on his speaking tour during the 1866 congressional campaign. After the Civil War, General DANIEL BUTTERFIELD was superintendent of the U.S. Recruiting Service in New York City. Docketed on the first page across Grant's writing: "Answd Oct 20/66". ½-inch separation at lower margin at vertical fold has been repaired with tape on verso (no show through). Mounting remnants at blank right margin of signature page. Overall, fine condition.
