ULYSSES S. GRANT and HAMILTON FISH. Partly Printed DS: "U.S. Grant" as President and "Hamilton Fish" as Secretary of State, 1p, 17¼x12. Washington, 1874 February 20. Appointment of Benjamin J. Spooner as U.S. Marshal for the District of Indiana for a term of four years. In 1866, Benjamin J. Spooner, Colonel of the Fifty-first Indiana Volunteers, was brevetted Brigadier-General for gallant and meritorious conduct during the Civil War particularly in the battles of Chattanooga, Resaca and Kenesaw Mountain where he lost his left arm. In 1870, President GRANT had appointed Spooner U.S. Marshal. This appointment was necessary because his commission had expired. Folds not at signatures show partial separations inexpertly repaired with tape touching 2 words. Lightly worn, full seal. Lightly creased and shaded.
