ULYSSES S. GRANT. Manuscript DS: "U.S. Grant" as President, 1p, 7½x11½. Executive Mansion, 1873 March 6. In full: "I hereby appoint Levi P. Luckey Private Secretary to the President of the United States to date from the fourth instant." Two days earlier, on March 4, 1873, President Grant took his oath of office for his second term. It was administered by Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase. A near-blizzard and zero degree temperature marred the inaugural parade, causing the marchers great discomfort. In 1857, Congress first appropriated funds for the President to hire a secretary. Levi P. Luckey succeeded Robert M. Douglas as President Grant's Private Secretary. Luckey served as Grant's Executive Clerk (1869-1871) and Assistant Private Secretary (1871-1873) before his promotion to Private Secretary to the President (1873-1877). Grant's signature, on the horizontal mid-fold, is faded. Matted. Fine condition.
