ULYSSES S. GRANT. Engraving, unsigned. B/w, 7¾x10¾ overall, image 5½x7½ (one surface). Facsimile signature beneath image. ©1863, Johnson, Fry & Co. Publishers, New York. . From a painting by Alonzo Chappel; "Likeness From the latest Photograph from life." Imprinted at lower margin: "Entered according to act of Congress A.D. 1863 by Johnson, Fry & Co. in the clerks (sic) office of the district court for the Southern District of N.Y." Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), born Hiram Ulysses Grant, became the 18th President of the U.S. (1869-1877) largely because of his popularity as a military hero. In 1863, the year this engraving was authorized, Grant was made a Major General after his decisive victory at Vicksburg and later given command of the Military Division of the Mississippi (October 18, 1863-March 18, 1864). Grant, who climbed to the highest rank in the U.S. Army in just four years of commanding Union forces, directed the strategy that led to the end of the Civil War in 1865, and, as General in Chief of the Army, he supervised the demobilization of the Army and the administration of the Reconstruction acts. Lightly shaded at blank right edge. Dampstained at upper right blank corner. Overall, fine condition. History for Sale watermark not present on original.
