It was ordered back to the mouth of the Rio Grande, where it embarked for Vera Cruz. It landed there on March 9, 1847 to join the army under General Winfield Scott. In September, after gallant conduct in the Battles of Molino del Rey and Chapultepec, Grant was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of the 4th Infantry. Captain Grant resigned from the Army in 1854. In 1861, he became Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers, in the Civil War. Slightly stained. Fine condition.
