ULYSSES S. GRANT. Manuscript DS: "U S Grant/1st Lt. 4th Infy/Regl Q.M.", 1p, 8x3¾. In full: "Received, Madison Barracks 31 December 1848, of Brevet Major J.R. Smith 2d Infty. AAGen USA. Three hundred Seventy five and 16/100 dollars, on account of the Qr. Ms. Dept. U.S.A." Marked "(Duplicates)". During the Mexican War, Grant served under Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, taking part in the battles of Palo Alto, Cerro Gordo, Churubusco and Molino del Rey and the capture of Monterrey and Vera Cruz. Grant wrote this letter from Mexico City as Second Lieutenant 4th Infantry, Regimental Quarter Master. He was later commissioned First Lieutenant of the Fourth Infantry to date from September 16, 1847, two days after the surrender of Mexico City to General Scott. Lieutenant Grant married Julia Dent on August 22, 1848. In 1848 and 1849, Lieutenant and Mrs. U.S. Grant were stationed at Madison Barracks, Sackets Harbor, New York. Shaded at left edge and horizontal fold touching "Regl Q.M.". Lightly creased. Slightly soiled.
