ULYSSES S. GRANT
As Chairman of the Incorporators of the Mexican Southern Railroad Company, Grant postpones a meeting.
Manuscript LS: "U.S. Grant", 1p, 5x8. New York, 1881 March 18. In full: "The meeting of the Incorporators of the Mexican Southern Railroad Company called for March 14th 1881, at 3 P.M., is postponed until such time and place as may be fixed by further notice from the Chairman." Grant had visited Mexico in the early part of 1880 and was hailed as its staunchest friend in the days of its struggle against Maximillian, who had been given the Mexican throne by the French in 1864. The Mexicans extended to Grant every possible act of personal and official courtesy. Because of his rapport with Mexico, he was made Chairman of the Incorporators of the Mexican Southern Railroad Company. Grant decided not to run for a third term in 1876 but sought the Republican nomination in 1880. At the Republican Convention held in Chicago in June, Grant led all opponents on the first ballot with 304 votes but 378 votes were needed for nomination. Grant's supporters could not attract others, who were opposed to a third term for anyone. By the 36th ballot, Grant's opponents united behind Ohio Congressman James A. Garfield, who was nominated with 399 votes. On lined paper with text in purple ink. Fine condition.
