Second Lieutenant Grant transmits a report from Mexico City to the Quartermaster General in Washington. Grant served with distinction in the Mexican War a later called it a wicked war, and regretted that he "had not moral courage enough to resign."
Manuscript LS: "U S Grant/2d Lt. 4th Infy/Regl. Q.M.", 1p, 8x10¾. Mexico, 1847 October 24.To General Thomas S. Jesup, Quarter Master General, Washington, D.C. In full: "I have the honor, herewith, to transmit a Summary Statement and Muster Roll for September, 1847." GRANT privately opposed the Mexican War. He wrote in his Memoirs: "I do not think there was ever a more wicked war than that waged by the United States on Mexico. I thought so at the time, when I was a youngster, only I had not moral courage enough to resign." During the Mexican War, Grant served under Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott, taking part in the battles of Palo Alto, Cerro Gordo, Churubusco and Molino del Rey and the capture of Monterrey and Vera Cruz. Grant wrote this letter from Mexico City as Second Lieutenant 4th Infantry, Regimental Quarter Master. He was later commissioned First Lieutenant of the Fourth Infantry to date from September 16, 1847, two days after the surrender of Mexico City to General Scott. THOMAS S. JESUP served as Quarter Master General of the Army from 1818 to his death in 1860. Folds. Ink smudge at 1 word of writing. 3½-inch separation at blank left horizontal fold touches docket on verso, ¾-inch separation at vertical fold at upper right blank edge. Shaded at folds on verso (light show through). Slightly chipped edges.
