ULYSSES S. GRANT and JOHN A. RAWLINS
President Grant signs an 1869 appointment with his Secretary of War, John Rawlins.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "U.S. Grant" as President and "Jno A. Rawlins" as Secretary of War, 1p, 15x18½. On vellum. Full, worn paper seal. Washington, 1869 April 14. Appointment of "Washington J. Sanborn as First Lieutenant in the Thirteenth Regiment of Infantry...." On February 23, 1869, President Andrew Johnson nominated SANBORN to be First Lieutenant. The nomination was received by the U.S. Senate on March 3, 1869, Johnson's last day in office. On March 30, 1869, President Grant re-nominated Sanborn and the Senate consented to the appointment. JOHN A. RAWLINS was General Grant's Chief of Staff. He was frequently described as Grant's "conscience" and "alter ego" and it is claimed that his zealous anti-liquor stance helped keep Grant sober during four years of war. Rawlins had contracted pulmonary consumption during the war. In 1868, Rawlins' physicians recommended he travel to the dry air of Arizona and claimed such a climate would add years to his life. Rawlins refused. He would rather serve as Secretary of War in Grant's administration and die by his chief's side than live apart from the man he had served so faithfully. Secretary of War John A. Rawlins was only 38 when he died of tuberculosis on September 9, 1869. Anything signed by Rawlins during his six months as Secretary of War is scarce and those also signed by Grant are very desirable. Worn. Stained and soiled. Nicked and torn edges ¾-inch tear at lower blank margin with small paper loss and 2½-inch tear at lower right blank area with small paper loss. Creased. Folds touch signatures.
