In part: "This is to certify that Edward Lyons, a recruit of the United States Army, having been recommended as a fit person to receive the appointment of Hospital Steward, the Secretary of War has selected him...and he is hereby appointed accordingly...a Sergeant of Ordnance...." Lyons was selected pursuant to an 1856 act "providing for a necessary increase and better organization of the medical and hospital department of the army". Seven months after Grant signed this document, President Johnson appointed him Secretary of War ad interim, succeeding Edwin M. Stanton whom he had suspended. Creased. Lightly stained. Stains touch "E" and "d" of Townsend signature. Folds, not at signature. Overall, fine condition.
