ULYSSES S. GRANT
Unsigned 2½x4 carte de visite, showing the future President as a 3-star general
Photograph, unsigned. Sepia, 2½x4 carte de visite of Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant, captioned "Gen. Grant" in lower margin. No printing on verso. West Point graduate Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) was one of the greatest military leaders the United States has produced. After winning many victories on the Mississippi during the American Civil War, culminating in the capture of Vicksburg (1863), he was brought to the Virginia theatre to face the forces of Robert E. Lee which had bested a long series of former Union generals. He finally compelled Lee's surrender (April, 1865) on generous terms. Grant's two terms as Republican President (1869-1877) were less fruitful. Although he had some successes, including suppression of the Ku Klux Klan, the personally honest Grant proved unable to prevent graft by subordinates. Swindled and left destitute in railroad investments, Grant wrote his highly regarded memoirs during a painful dying struggle with cancer, in order to restore his family's fortunes. This photo shows Grant as a lieutenant general (3 stars), a rank he was awarded by President Lincoln in a White House ceremony on March 9, 1864. The only previous US generals to have worn three stars were George Washington and Winfield Scott. Grant became America's first 4-star general in July 1866, so he must have posed for this photo between those two dates. Lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
