Appointment of a patent attorney to represent the United States at a Congress in Vienna.
Partly Printed Presidential Warrant signed: "U.S. Grant" as President, 1p, 8x10. Washington, 1873 June 7. In full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State [Hamilton Fish] to affix the Seal of the United States to a Full Power authorizing Hon. J.M. Thacher to represent the United States at the International Congress to be held at Vienna relating to Patent Rights, dated this day, and signed by me: and for so doing this shall be his warrant." A lawyer, JOHN MARSHALL THACHER was captain in the 13th Vermont regiment during the Civil War. He was appointed assistant examiner in the U.S. Patent Office in 1864 and was passed through the different grades until November 1, 1874, when he became Commissioner. He resigned on October 1, 1875 and resumed the practice of law. In 1870, three years before this document, U.S. patent laws were modified by Congress. Folds, not touching signature. Fine condition.
