ULYSSES S. GRANT. Partly Printed Warrant signed: "U.S. Grant" as President, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Washington, 1876 September 22. The President authorizes and directs Secretary of State Hamilton Fish "to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the conditional pardon of Leopold Wirth, Aaron Schoenfeld, Charles Grau, and William Bergenthal...." The William Bergenthal Company was in the distilling business in Milwaukee. In 1874, BERGENTHAL, the company's President, married Miss Anna M. Grau who, most probably, was related to Charles Grau. President ULYSSES S. GRANT (1822-1885) signed this warrant directing Secretary of State HAMILTON FISH (1808-1893) to place the Seal of the United States on the pardon of Leopold Wirth, Aaron Schoenfeld, Charles Grau and William Bergenthal. Grant, as President (1869-1877) had the power to give pardons according to Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution. Grant issued 1,332 pardons, more than any of his predecessors. The Great Seal, kept by the Secretary of State, validated such official government documents (Fish was Grant's only Secretary of State). Prior to 1952, the Seal was only applied by the Secretary upon the signed order of the President; since that time, the volume of papers requiring authentication has resulted in an executive order that permits the Secretary of State to use the Seal on certain official documents without a presidential warrant. Lightly creased. Folds, horizontal fold through signature. Fine condition.
