Harding, of lawful age, being sworn, says that a printed notice, a copy of which is hereunto attached, was published for three consecutive weeks in the marion star, a newspaper published and in general circulation in said Marion County, immediately previous to the 29th day of May A.D., 1897, and that at the time he was pub of said paper." Actual ad, cut from the newspaper, is affixed at upper left: "Notice of Appointment./Estate of John Short, deceased./The undersigned has been appointed and/qualified as administrator of the estate/of John Short, late of Marion County, deceased./Dated this 13th day of May, A.D. 1897./50t3 J.R. HARSHBERGER, Marion, Ohio." On November 26, 1884, 19-year-old Warren Harding and two friends had purchased the "The Marion Star". The first edition rolled off the press on November 26, 1884 at ten cents a copy. Harding had competition from two other local papers for advertising revenue, but the paper thrived after he married Florence Kling DeWolfe in 1891 and turned its business operations over to her. The day President Harding left Washington for his ill-fated West Coast trip in June 1923, it was announced that he was selling the "Star". Horizontal fold just touches top of Harding's second signature. Staple holes at upper left corner touch ad. Overall, fine condition.
