WARREN G. HARDING
Proof of Publication of an ad in Harding's newspaper filled out and signed twice by him.
Early Partly Printed Document Signed (twice): "W G Harding", 1p, 8¼x4½. Marion, Ohio, 1891 June 23. In full: "Proof of Publication. W.G. Harding, of lawful age, being sworn, says that a printed notice, a copy of which is hereunto attached, was published for three consecutive weeks in Marion Star, a newspaper published and in general circulation in said Marion County, immediately previous to twentieth day of June A.D., 1891, and that at the time he was publisher of said paper." The notice, a copy of which is affixed at upper left, relates to the appointment of Charles C. Fisher "as assignee in trust for the benefit of the creditors of Martha E. Wright". Harding was 18 when he became editor and publisher of "The Marion Star" in 1884. He signed this document when he was 25 years old. He continued as publisher for the rest of his life. The day President Harding left Washington for his ill-fated Western trip in June 1923, it was announced that he planned to sell his newspaper. He never had the chance; he died in San Francisco on August 2, 1923. Lightly creased. Folds, horizontal fold touches the upper portion of one of Harding's signatures. Creased. Lightly worn. 1-inch separations at blank left and right margins at horizontal fold which touches the second signature. Staple holes at upper left corner.
