Butler Wright of New York as "a Commissioner to represent the United States in the International Exposition to be held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil commencing the 7th day of September 1922." The exposition was held to celebrate the centenary of Brazilian Independence. JOSHUA BUTLER WRIGHT (1877-1939) was U.S. Minister to Hungary (1927-1930), Uruguay (1930-1934) and Czechoslovakia (1934-1937) and U.S. Ambassador to Cuba 1937-1939; he died in office. CHARLES EVANS HUGHES had served as Governor of New York (1907-1910) when Taft appointed him Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. After resigning to run for President in 1916, Hughes served as Secretary of State under Presidents WARREN G. HARDING and his successor, Calvin Coolidge (1921-1925), before Hoover returned Hughes to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice (1930-1941). Fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 40½x21½.
