WARREN G. HARDING
He acknowledges receipt of telegram "in the hours of anxiety" as the country awaits the end of crippling railway strike.
Typed Letter Signed: "Warren G. Harding" as 29th U.S. President, 1p, 7x9. The White House, Washington, 1922 September 12. To Wilbur F. Wakeman, New York. In full: "It was good of you to wire the sympathy of Mrs. Wakeman and yourself. Such assurances of friendly interest have been very heartening in the hours of anxiety." In July 1922, in the midst of a railroad strike, President Harding ordered emergency measures to assure delivery of food and other goods and services. A plan to end this national railroad shopmen's strike was reached in early September. On September 13, 1922, the day after this letter was written, the strikers were told to return to their jobs but anxiety remained because some rail lines resisted the settlement plan. Horizontal fold touches the top of the "W" in Warren. ¼-inch separation at horizontal fold at blank left margin. Lightly shaded at top and bottom blank margins. Overall, fine condition.
