WARREN G. HARDING
President Harding the pipe smoker.
Typed Letter Signed: "Warren G. Harding" as 29th U.S. President, 1p, 7x8-3/4. The White House, Washington, 1922 December 19. To Mr. H.E. Chubbuck, Illinois Traction System, Peoria, Illinois. In full: "Just a line to thank you for the beautiful and extremely satisfactory pipe which you sent me through the kindness of Senator McKinley. I occasionally smoke a pipe and this has been a particularly agreeable one for my purposes." It is known that Harding's favorite way of passing an evening was around the poker table with the boys, the air heavy with cigar smoke. In fact, his nomination for President was decided in a smoke-filled room at Chicago's Blackstone Hotel after the first day of the convention ended with nine ballots and no leading candidate emerging. Now we know he also smoked a pipe. WILLIAM B. McKINLEY (1856-1926) was Republican U.S. Senator from Illinois from 1921 until his death. 7x2-inch shading across the upper portion, 7x1¼-inch shading across lower portion (probably from prior framing). Lightly soiled at lower left blank corner.
