WILLIAM H. TAFT. Rare Autograph Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft", 1p, 6¼x9½. On Princess Hotel stationery, Bermuda, 1921 January 3. To Miss Kate Eisig, Yonkers, N.Y. In full: "I thank you for your kind note of New Year's greetings. I am sorry that you did not stay longer so that I might have made your acquaintance. I hope that you had a comfortable trip home and even if it was rough, I hope you have forgotten all that and can enjoy the beauty of this Island in retrospect. With best wishes." On May 19, 1921, Edward D. White whom President Taft had appointed Chief Justice in 1910, died. On June 30th, just six months after the former President wrote this letter, he realized his lifelong dream when President Harding appointed him to succeed White as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Taft served until a month before his death on March 8, 1930. Lightly creased. Folds, touch some text, not at signature. Pinhead-size stain at lower left blank margin. Slight ink smudge in middle of page.
