WILLIAM H. TAFT
William Taft sends his autograph to a collector.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft", 1p, 4¾x2¾. New Haven, 1914 January 23. To Mr. Philip St. Ward, Germantown, Pennsylvania. In full: "I hope that your autograph collection will grow in number and interest and am honored to have my signature included in it." Taft, who left the White House on March 4, 1913, was Professor of Law at Yale University, New Haven from April 1, 1913, until his resignation shortly before being sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on June 30, 1921. Taft had enrolled at Yale in 1874 and graduated in 1878 at the age of 20. While he was at Yale, his father prominent attorney Alphonso Taft, was serving as Secretary of War and then Attorney General under President Grant. Although William, called "Willie" as a boy, finished second in his class of 191, his parents expressed their disappointment at his performance. Letters written for inclusion in autograph collections are always desirable. Fine condition.
