WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends an autograph letter returning an article that can be published without delay.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft", 1p, 5x8. Ritz Carlton, Montreal, 1921 June 18. On his personal "William H. Taft/New Haven, Conn." stationery. To Mr. Croll. In full: "Here in (sic, is) a revised proof of Duke's article - You can print it at any time without further delay so far as I am concerned - That is if you think any body will be interested in it. It was not on my initiation as you know and I am not responsible if you find it proves to be dead matter in your Sunday edition." Chief Justice Edward D. White had died on May 19, 1921. On June 30, 1921, just 12 days after this letter was written, President Harding appointed Taft as Chief Justice. Taft's father, Alphonso, once said that the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was greater than the Presidency. Twice, President Theodore Roosevelt had offered to Taft an appointment to the Supreme Court as Associate Justice. Taft's presidential ambitions took over and, after serving a term as President (1909-1913), he finally got to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice, appointed by the next Republican President, Warren G. Harding. Taft served until retiring a month before his death in 1930. Lightly creased. Folds. Fine condition.
