Autograph Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft" as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, 1p, 5x8. Point a Pic, P.O., [Province Ontario, Canada], (1929) June 28. On Supreme Court letterhead to Gurney E. Newlin, Esq., Pres. Am. Bar Association, Savoy Plaset Hotel. In full: "The illness I have had and the absence of my secretary on his vacation have delayed my correspondence. I have your telegram of the 25th. I can not answer until after inquiry from the Clerk and my colleagues." Light purple receipt stamp at blank area: "Received/Jul 5 1929/Newlin & Ashburn." Taft's father Alfonso, Grant's Secretary of War and Attorney General, once said that the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was greater than the Presidency. From his early years as Judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati (1887-1890), Taft had always envisioned himself on the Supreme Court. President Harding, who had made Taft's nomination speech in 1912 and whom Taft supported for President, appointed Taft as Chief Justice on June 30, 1921. On February 3, 1930, he resigned because of ill health. Five weeks later, on March 8, 1930, Taft died of heart disease in Washington, D.C. He was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. Folds do not touch signature. Fine condition.
