WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft signs a note on a White House Card on December 5, 1912.
Autograph Note on White House Card signed: "For F.W. Chamberlain,/with best wishes,/Wm H Taft/Dec. 5th 1912" as President, 4¼x2¾. The Executive Mansion card was introduced by President Grant, c. 1876-1877. The name was changed to "The White House" by Theodore Roosevelt in 1901. Exactly one month before he signed this card, Republican Taft came in third in his bid for reelection. Democrat Wilson won 40 states and 435 electoral votes and Progressive Theodore Roosevelt won six states and 88 electoral votes. Taft won Utah and Vermont's eight electoral votes. Lightly smudged "m" of Wm., "af" of Taft and "th" of the date. Light transfer of type at lower right corner. Overall, fine condition.
