WILLIAM H. TAFT
Taken the year he was elected President.
Photograph signed: "Very Sincerely yours/Wm H Taft". Sepia, 6¼x8¾. Embossed seal at lower right: "Harris & Ewing 1908". Taft was appointed Secretary of War by President Theodore Roosevelt on January 11, 1904 to succeed Elihu Root. He resigned in June 1908, having received the Republican nomination for President. Taft defeated William Jennings Bryan in November and was elected President. Photograph bears a five-line Harris & Ewing copyright rubber stamp on verso. This photograph, taken in 1908, was taken either for the campaign or after the election; it may have been signed as President. Although signed in a dark area, the contrast is very good. Surface scratches not visible head on. Fingerprint from negative on print at right edge. Overall, fine handsome appearance.
