William Taft signs a United Sates Internal Revenue Distillery Revenue Stamp
as Collector of Internal Revenue.
Printed form signed: "Wm H. Taft" as Collector of Internal
Revenue for the First District, State of Ohio, 1p, 7¾x3. (Cincinnati), no
date but 1882-1883. Pale blue U.S. Internal Revenue Distillery Warehouse
Stamp not filled in, picturing Zachary Taylor. In March 1882, 24-year-old Taft
was appointed collector by President Chester A. Arthur. Taft resigned a year
later because he did not want to discharge good workers to make jobs for
Republicans. Tiny hole at blank left margin, 3 triangular holes punched on the
right portion, one close to but not touching Taft's signature, else
fine.
