William Howard Taft signs a pencil drawing of himself by M. H.
Herrin.
Original Art inscribed and signed: "For M.H. Herrin/with best
wishes/Wm H. Taft" as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Pencil
drawing, 9x11½ overall, image 6¼x7 (one surface). Also signed by the
artist: "M./H./Herrin./1929." Label affixed at lower left corner:
"Washington, D.C.,/October 15, 1929." Signed less than five months before
Taft's death on March 8, 1930. William Howard Taft (1857-1930) was the
27th U.S. President (1909-1913). The handpicked successor of Theodore
Roosevelt, Taft lost his bid for a second term in a three-way race between
Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson and Progressive Party candidate Roosevelt.
Taft then served as Kent Chair Professor of Constitutional Law at Yale
(1913-1921) before being appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by
President Warren G. Harding in 1921. He served until February 3, 1930, a few
weeks before his death. Lightly soiled, minor stains at lower right margin.
Stray ink mark at lower left margin above label. Overall, fine
condition.
