WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT and M.H. HERRIN
William Howard Taft signs a pencil drawing of himself by M. H. Herrin.
Original Art inscribed and signed: "For M.H. Herrin/with best wishes/Wm H. Taft" as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Pencil drawing, 9x11½ overall, image 6¼x7 (one surface). Also signed by the artist: "M./H./Herrin./1929." Label affixed at lower left corner: "Washington, D.C.,/October 15, 1929." Signed less than five months before Taft's death on March 8, 1930. William Howard Taft (1857-1930) was the 27th U.S. President (1909-1913). The handpicked successor of Theodore Roosevelt, Taft lost his bid for a second term in a three-way race between Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson and Progressive Party candidate Roosevelt. Taft then served as Kent Chair Professor of Constitutional Law at Yale (1913-1921) before being appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by President Warren G. Harding in 1921. He served until February 3, 1930, a few weeks before his death. Lightly soiled, minor stains at lower right margin. Stray ink mark at lower left margin above label. Overall, fine condition.
