Cincinnati, 1898 January 13. Taft thanks attorney Frederick Ullman,
Chicago. In full: "I have your favor of the 11th. inst. and beg to
thank you and your committee for the honor of the invitation to attend the
dinner to be given by the Chicago Bar Association in honor of Mr. Choate of New
York, at the Palmer House in Chicago, on Friday evening February 4th.. It would
give me great pleasure to be present and also respond to one of the toasts to
which you so kindly invite me, but my official engagements are such that it is
absolutely impossible for me to attend. I am with respect very sincerely
yours," Taft served as Judge, U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Sixth
Circuit from 1892-1900. JOSEPH H. CHOATE, a New York City lawyer, was
counsel in important cases such as the Tweed Ring prosecution, Standard Oil
antitrust cases and income tax cases. He later served as U.S. Ambassador to
Great Britain (1899-1905) and was head of the U.S. delegation to the second
International Peace Conference at The Hague (1907). Lightly creased, lightly
stained. Toned at right margin. First page shows ¼-inch horizontal tear at blank
right. Light vertical fold touches "u". Overall, fine
condition.
