WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends a letter of thanks to attorney Frederick Ullman.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft" as Judge, 1½p, 5x8. Cincinnati, 1898 January 13. Taft thanks attorney Frederick Ullman, Chicago. In full: "I have your favor of the 11th. inst. and beg to thank you and your committee for the honor of the invitation to attend the dinner to be given by the Chicago Bar Association in honor of Mr. Choate of New York, at the Palmer House in Chicago, on Friday evening February 4th.. It would give me great pleasure to be present and also respond to one of the toasts to which you so kindly invite me, but my official engagements are such that it is absolutely impossible for me to attend. I am with respect very sincerely yours," Taft served as Judge, U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1892-1900. JOSEPH H. CHOATE, a New York City lawyer, was counsel in important cases such as the Tweed Ring prosecution, Standard Oil antitrust cases and income tax cases. He later served as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain (1899-1905) and was head of the U.S. delegation to the second International Peace Conference at The Hague (1907). Lightly creased, lightly stained. Toned at right margin. First page shows ¼-inch horizontal tear at blank right. Light vertical fold touches "u". Overall, fine condition.
