WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends a typed letter saying that he is not able to help.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft" as Chief Justice, 1p, 8x6. Washington, D.C., 1929 January 18. To Mr. Boos. In full: "I can not give you any information as to the name 'Douglas' or ss. I presume that I took it from some volume that I had, but it was not based on any investigation at all. I was very much pressed to deliver the address, and it was a hurried presentation. I am sorry not to be able to help you." The words "or ss" indicating Douglas or Douglass, have been handwritten by Taft. From 1912 to 1937, JOHN E. BOOS of Albany, New York, collected documents and letters relating to personal experiences with Abraham Lincoln. In 1911, President Taft signed a bill creating the Lincoln Memorial Commission. The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated on May 30, 1922, when now Chief Justice Taft, Chairman of the Commission, presented the finished structure to President Harding and the American people. Taft may have referred to Stephen A. Douglas or Frederick Douglass in his presentation speech. Erased pencil note at upper left corner (unknown hand). Folds. Horizontal fold touches signature. Fine condition.
