WILLIAM H. TAFT
The President writes of Canadian-American Reciprocity to the uncle of his Secretary of War.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1911 February 17. To Rev. Henry A. Stimson, D.D., New York City. In full: "I have your letter of February 15th and I am glad you approve the reciprocity with Canada. I am afraid that Doctor Fairbairn's father is an exception." Canadian-American Reciprocity dates back to the 19th century when in order to avoid the movement favoring annexing Canada to the U.S., the British supported reciprocal trade with Americans as an alternative. In 1911, under the endorsement of President Taft, the U.S. offered Canada a limited reciprocal trade treaty. Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier accepted it, but it was a primary reason why he was voted out of power -- for many Canadians had still feared U.S. domination. HENRY ALBERT STIMSON was a Presbyterian clergyman and the uncle of Henry Lewis Stimson, Taft's Secretary of War (1911-1913). Lightly creased. Signature is damp stained. Light type transference at blank areas from being folded. Fine condition.
