WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends a typed letter saying that a quote attributed him is not correct.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft" as Chief Justice, 1p, 8x10¼. Supreme Court, Washington, D.C., 1923 March 26. To Rev. Paul R. Hickock, D.D., Second Presbyterian Church, Troy, N.Y. In full: "I have yours of the 17th of March. I don't remember making the statement of which you speak. I believe the Silliman Institute was an excellent institution and did good work, but I can not think that I made so sweeping a reference to it as that which you quote." Silliman Institute (now, Silliman University) was founded on August 28, 1901, in Dumaguete City, Philippines. It was an elementary school for boys founded by Protestant missionaries Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and Laura Crooks Hibbard under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. Operations started through a gift donation from a businessman and a Christian philanthropist of Cohoes, New York, Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman. William H. Taft had been Governor-General of the Philippines from 1901-1904. Light folds, slightly creased. Fine condition.
