Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft" as Roosevelt's Secretary of War, 1p, 5½x9. War Department, Washington, 1908 April 12. To The Editor, Daily Free Press, Mankato, Michigan. In full: "On my arrival in Washington I find your telegram of April 9th advising me that all counties holding conventions in Southern Minnesota passed strong resolutions for me. I beg to thank you for your trouble in telegraphing me, and for the gratifying character of information your telegram contains. With warm appreciation, believe me, Very sincerely yours," In 1907, with the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt who decided not to run for reelection, Taft began his quest for the presidency. Two months after writing this letter, Taft was nominated for President on the first ballot at the Republican National Convention held in Chicago. He was elected in November, defeating William Jennings Bryan. Light type transfer. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
