WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends a typed letter of thanks for the primary clippings.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft," 1p, 7x9¼. New Haven, Conn., 1914 May 25. A year after he left the White House, the former 27th U.S. President writes to Cyrus Oakes, Chicago. In full: "I have your letter of May 23rd, and thank you very much for sending me the clippings showing the result of the primaries in Gary, Indiana. I have read the clippings of these primaries with much interest." In an unusually long handwritten postscript, Taft adds: "I have just come from Cincinnati. My brother Charles was very much interested in the directory you sent me. He will give it to the Cincinnati Historical Society but he finds it most interesting reading." After leaving the White House, WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT, a former attorney and judge whose major ambition was to become Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, accepted an appointment as a law professor at Yale, where he taught and participated in student activities for eight years. This letter was written during that time by Taft, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, who had also served as a professor and dean of the law department of the University of Cincinnati. The President's eldest brother Charles was owner and editor of the Cincinnati Times-Star from 1880 to his death in 1929. Horizontal fold touches the signature, else fine.
