WILLIAM H. TAFT
Nine months before his appointment as Chief Justice, Taft informs former Congressman Charles Washburn that he cannot yet give "full consideration" to Washburn's inquiry.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft", 1p, 7¾x10½. On his New Haven stationery, 1920 August 16. To former Congressman Charles G. Washburn, Worcester, Mass. In full: "I have yours of August 6th. My secretary has been away from me all summer at the sick bed of his wife and I have been very much hampered in my writing and correspondence. Here I am not able to give the subject upon which you make inquiry full consideration and you must wait until I get back to New Haven, which will be after the 15th of October." Republican Charles G. Washburn (1857-1928) represented Massachusetts in Congress from 1905-1911. Taft spent his summers at Pointe-au-Pic, Quebec, so this letter most probably was written from Canada. Nine months later, President Harding appointed Taft, a fellow Ohioan, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches "f" in Taft.
