WILLIAM H. TAFT
In his first year as a Yale law professor following his unsuccessful bid for re-election, Taft recommends Willard Straight for membership in the University Club.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft", 1p, 7x9¼. Manchester, Vermont, 1913 September 7. To Willard Straight, 23 Wall Street, New York. In full: "I have your letter of September 5th, and have to-day written a letter to the Membership Committee of the University Club, a copy of which I enclose." Copy not present. Taft had left the White House on March 4th and had become a professor at Yale University on April 1st, so Taft is referring to the University Club at Yale. Willard Straight helped finance the publication of "New Republic" magazine in 1914. He enlisted in the Army in 1917. While Straight was in the army, his wife Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight, heiress to the Whitney fortune, worked for many volunteer groups at home. Major Willard Straight developed pneumonia from a bad case of influenza and died in Paris in 1918 at the age of 38. Soiled and stained at blank margins. Staple holes at upper left. Horizontal fold touches signature.
