WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends a typed letter acknowledging the resignation of the assistant librarian of the law school not being able to return in October.
Typed Letter Signed: "W H Taft" as Judge, U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals For the Sixth Circuit, 1p, 8¼x10¼. Cincinnati, 1897 September 11. To James S. Richards, Esq., Ass't. Librarian, Law School, Cincinnati, Ohio. In full: "I have your favor of the 10th of Sept. advising me that circumstances will not permit you to return to the Law School in October, but that you will remain in the library until October 1st and be able to finish the work there and get the library ready for use. This is satisfactory." At the time this letter was written, Taft was also serving as the Dean of the University of Cincinnati Law School. He left both posts in 1900 when President McKinley named him president of the U.S. Philippines Commission and, in 1901, Governor General of the Philippine Islands. He returned to judicial duties when he was appointed by President Harding as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1921, the only U.S. President ever to serve on the Supreme Court. Folds, one vertical fold through "H" of signature, some light creasing, else fine.
