PRESIDENT WILLIAM H. TAFT - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 09/14/1903 - HFSID 30765
Price: $900.00
WILLIAM H. TAFT
William H. Taft sends a typed letter declining to write an
article.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H. Taft" as Civil Governor of the
Philippine Islands, 1p, 8x10½. Manila, P.I., 1903 September 14. To
Hamilton Holt, Esq., Editor of "The Independent", New York City. In full:
"I have your kind letter of the 6th of August. I am sorry to say that
more than a year ago I entered into a contract with Scribners to write an
article of 20,000 words or more on Civil Administration in the Orient, or some
such subject. I am under contract to do this, and yet opportunity does not seem
to offer when I can write the article. Until that is out of the way I can make
no further agreements. These promises come back to me like ghosts and I have
suffered so much from them I must withhold the temptation to enter into more of
them. With warm regards, Sincerely yours," Taft served as Civil Governor
of the Philippine Islands from 1901 until 1904 when he became Roosevelt's
Secretary of War. Lightly soiled and creased. 1½-inch diagonal tear at upper
margin (all intact).
