WILLIAM H. TAFT
Taft sends regrets to former Congressman Charles Washburn, but is eager to read his article.
Typed Letter Signed: "Wm H Taft", 1p, 7½x10½. New Haven, Connecticut, 1919 November 3. To Hon. Charles G. Washburn, Worcester, Massachusetts. In full: "I have your note of November 1st. I was glad to see you and Mrs. Washburn in the audience. It made me feel at home. I am sorry that on the dates you mention I have to be in Pennsylvania to meet engagements long since made. I shall be at my office on Thursday, November 13th and Friday, November 14th and would be glad to see you on either one of those days, or if not then, then on Friday, November 28th. I shall be very glad to read your article in the Harvard Magazine. It has not yet come." After the letter was typed, the article arrived and Taft penned: "The article is here." WASHBURN represented Massachusetts in Congress from 1906-1911. He was also a delegate to the 1904 and 1916 Republican National Conventions. Evidently, Washburn was in the audience when TAFT delivered a speech. Taft writes it made him "feel at home", perhaps referring to the years he was President speaking before Congress with Congressman Washburn in the audience. Slightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches the "m" of William. Light paper clip impression at upper left blank corner. Fine condition.
