BILL CLINTON
Signed photo of Clinton as a Boys Nation delegate, shaking hands with
JFK
Photograph signed: "Bill/Clinton". B/w, 8x10. Also signed:
"Michael/Simpson/BN/AL". On July 24, 1963 young William Jefferson
Clinton, attending American Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., met and shook hands
with President John F. Kennedy. Clinton, then 17 and already an admirer of
JFK, was one of two delegates from Arkansas Boys State elected to Boys Nation.
Kennedy's speech thanked Boys Nation for supporting his civil rights
legislation; Clinton was one of four southern delegates who had voted for it,
providing the swing votes to pass the resolution. Thirty years later
Clinton, a fellow Democrat who shared many of Kennedy's strengths and
weaknesses, would move into the White House as the 42nd President. The other
signature may merit further research. Michael Simpson was obviously a fellow
delegate to Boys Nation. The "AL" abbreviation here could stand for Alabama, or
for American Legion, the sponsor of Boys States and Boys Nation. Fine
condition.
