BILL CLINTON. Book inscribed and signed: "To Margaret Miller/with best wishes/Bill Clinton/10-28-00" as 42nd U.S. President, 200p, 5½x8, hardcover. His book, Between Hope and History: Meeting America's Challenges for the 21st Century, Times Books, a division of Random House, New York: 1996. First Edition. Dedicated to his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea. From the Preface: "This book continues the conversation I have had with the American people about our destiny as a nation, our duty to prepare for the new century, and our need for a shared vision of twenty-first century America that will enable us to grasp the extraordinary opportunities of this age of possibility...My vision for America at the dawn of a new century is of a nation in which the American Dream is reality for all who are willing to work for it...To achieve this vision, we must pursue a three-part strategy...In the three main sections of this book - Opportunity, Responsibility, and Community - I explore the most important challenges we face today...We have 10 million new jobs; the deficit is down from $290 billion to $117 billion; our government is smaller by over 225,000 employees but is more effective; the crime rate has dropped steadily as we have put more police on the streets and taken guns away from felons, fugitives, and stalkers; our environmental and public-health standards are higher; our families are healthier and stronger. Still, there is clearly more to do That is what much of this book is about...." Published the year Clinton would be elected to his second term as 42nd U.S. President (1993-2001). In the year he inscribed this book, Clinton was in his final full year in the presidency, and his Vice President, Al Gore, and George W. Bush would face off for the Oval Office just days later. The former Governor of Arkansas (1979-1981, 1983-1992), William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton (born in 1946) was the first Democrat reelected President since FDR. The only elected U.S. President to be impeached (Andrew Johnson was impeached, but he had not been elected to the office), on February 12, 1999, President Clinton was acquitted on both articles of impeachment brought against him: charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. Clinton's popularity stood at 67% at the end of his trial, however. Obviously, many Americans were willing to overlook his personal failings in an era of peace and prosperity. His accomplishments in office included a waiting period for gun purchases (the Brady Law), the Family and Medical Leave Act, the North American Free Trade Agreement, welfare reform and balancing of the federal budget. Clinton had previously co-written (with Al Gore) Putting People First (1992), and Clinton would publish his successful autobiography, My Life, in 2004. In original dust jacket, which is slightly creased at corners. Fine condition.
