BILL CLINTON. Typed Letter signed: "Bill", 1p, 6¼x9¼. No place, 2005 January 27. On his embossed personal letterhead to Reverend Stan Easty, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In full: "Hillary and I were sorry to learn of your recent illness and wanted you to know we're thinking about you. Hang in there! You are in our prayers. Sincerely" . Stan Easty, a retired Episcopal minister and well-known North Carolina mariner, had previously visited the White House with his wife Reba. The Clintons' prayers were not answered. Reverend Easty died soon after this letter was written. Governor of Arkansas (1979-1981, 1983-1992), Bill Clinton was the first Democrat reelected President since FDR. He served from 1993-2001 and was the only elected U.S. President to be impeached. On February 12, 1999, President Clinton was acquitted on both articles of impeachment brought against him: charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. Clinton's popularity stood at 67% at the end of his trial, however. Obviously, many Americans were willing to overlook his personal failings in an era of peace and prosperity. Nor was his support based solely on personal charm. His accomplishments in office included a waiting period for gun purchases (the Brady Law), the Family and Medical Leave Act, the North American Free Trade Agreement, welfare reform and balancing of the federal budget. Mailing fold, with faint ink transfer to blank lower portion of letter. Otherwise, fine condition.
