PRESIDENT WILLIAM McKINLEY CO-SIGNED BY: J.P. GALLAHER
Leather-bound notebook owned by McKinley during his second term as Ohio's federal Representative
Annotated notebook unsigned. With sheet in front cover pocket signed "J.P. Gallaher", certifying that it was the property of McKinley and that it came into Gallaher's possession when he worked for McKinley in 1890. 120 pages with writing inside covers, 3½x5¾ ruled, gold-edged pages with 3½x5¾ brown leather covers. This notebook contains notes and expenses in pencil and black ink, some of them dated. About half the pages are empty. McKinley represented Ohio as a Republican in Congress from 1877-1883 and 1885-1891 and served as Governor of Ohio from 1892-1896. He campaigned on the promises of high protective tariffs and preservation of the gold standard. Elected 25th U.S. President in 1896, he was reelected to a second term in 1900 with a larger plurality of votes than any other Chief Executive before him. The U.S. became a world power during his Presidency, winning a war with Spain (1898) and acquiring overseas colonies (Puerto Rico and the Philippines). On September 6, 1901, at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, President McKinley was shot by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. He died on September 14, 1901, the third President to be assassinated. Lightly toned and soiled. Cover is scuffed and rear cover has lower left corner folded over. Closing strap missing from cover. Otherwise, fine condition.
