WILLIAM McKINLEY and LYMAN G. GAGE
Appointment of the Assistant Appraiser of Merchandise in the District of New York in 1898.
Partly Printed DS: "William McKinley" as President and "L. Gage" as Secretaty of the Treasury, 1p, 19x15. Washington, 1898 January 17. In part: "Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Integrity, Diligence and Discretion of George W. Wanamaker I have nominated, and, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, I do appoint him Assistant Appraiser of Merchandise in the District of New York, in the State of New York...." McKinley was first elected Republican Congressman from Ohio in 1876. He served from 1877-1883, losing a contested election in 1882. He returned to the House and served another four terms (1885-1891). At the Republican National Convention Congressman McKinley received two votes for President on the first ballot, adding two more votes on the eighth ballot, which nominated Benjamin Harrison. McKinley lost his bid for reelection to Congress in 1890 but was elected Governor of Ohio in 1891. At the 1892 Convention, he was third in the first ballot voting; President Harrison was renominated. By 1896, McKinley had enough nationwide support to get the Republican nomination unanimously. Eagle vignette at top center. Creased at blank margins. Upper right corner missing. Otherwise, fine condition.
