verso, Deville has penned and signed a cancellation of three shares, also signed: "In presence
of/A. McKinley Secy" as witnessed by lawyer ABNER McKINLEY, the 21-year old
brother of the then 26-year-old future President. The Canton Building Association was
a local private cooperative credit agency lending home mortgages. The authorized capital
stock for Association No. 1 was $400,000, with each share valued at $200. In 1869, William
McKinley was elected prosecuting attorney of Stark County, Ohio. He had moved to Canton in
1867 and began his law practice there. When William McKinley, Sr. died on November 24,
1892, then Ohio Governor McKinley dropped the "Jr." from his signature. Darkly penned with
show through from both sides touching three letters of "McKinley" on verso and just nicking the
top of the "J" of signature on face of document. Folds, vertical fold touches McKinley's
signature on face side. Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition.
