WILLIAM McKINLEY
Three weeks before his reelection, the President thanks a New Yorker.
TLS: "William McKinley" as 25th U.S. President, 1p, 6¾x9. Executive Mansion, Washington, 1900 October 15. To Moses Smith, 51 West 117th Street, New York City. In full: "I have your letter of the 11th instant and have noted its contents with much interest. With cordial thanks for your courtesy, and assuring you that your kindly expressions are appreciated, believe me, Sincerely yours." Due to the death of McKinley's first Vice President, Garret Hobart, in 1899, a new running mate, New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt, was chosen at the June 19-21, 1900, Republican National Convention. On November 6, 1900, McKinley-Roosevelt defeated the Democratic ticket of William Jennings Bryan and former Vice President Adlai E. Stevenson, 7.2 million to 6.4 million popular votes, 292-55 electoral votes, 28-17 states. Six months after his second inauguration, President McKinley was assassinated and Vice President Roosevelt became President. Lightly browned, very light foxing at side margins, not at signature. Lightly creased, else fine condition.
