WOODROW WILSON and HIS CABINET
The 28th U.S. President and his original Cabinet, 1913-1914.
Signatures: "Woodrow Wilson" as 28th U.S. President and Secretary of War "Lindley M. Garrison", Attorney General "J.C. McReynolds", Secretary of State "W.J. Bryan", Secretary of the Treasury "W.G. McAdoo", Postmaster General "A.S. Burleson", Secretary of the Interior "Franklin K. Lane", Secretary of Agriculture "D.F. Houston", Secretary of the Navy "Josephus Daniels", Secretary of Labor "W.B. Wilson" and Secretary of Commerce "William C. Redfield", 1p, 7x8½. These were the ten original members of President Woodrow Wilson's Cabinet who took office on March 5, 1913. On August 29, 1914, President Wilson appointed Attorney General McReynolds as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court to replace Horace H. Lurton, who had died. The election of 1912, which swept the Democrats into the White House, was unique in U.S. history. There were three major nominees instead of the usual two. The losing candidates were the incumbent President, Republican William H. Taft, and his predecessor, Republican Theodore Roosevelt, running as the Progressive Party nominee. For the only time in history, a major party candidate finished third (Taft). The Republicans were split, the Democrats were unified and for the first time in 16 years, there was a Democrat in the White House. Irregular left edge. Heavily shaded from other papers lying on top of this page, touching all writing. Stray pencil mark at blank right margin. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso lightly show through in blank margin.
