WOODROW WILSON and JAMES C. McREYNOLDS
President and future Supreme Court Justice appoint a woman to be a Notary Public.
Partly Printed DS: "Woodrow Wilson" as 28th U.S. President and "J.C. McReynolds" as Attorney General, 1p, 21x16. Washington, 1914 April 24. Appointment of Clara M. Reichenbach as "Notary Public for the District of Columbia...for the term of five years from the date hereof." Three months after signing this appointment, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Horace H. Lurton died. Since becoming Attorney General on March 5, 1913, JAMES C. McREYNOLDS managed to anger several members of Congress with his temper and haughtiness. To smooth the waters, President WILSON nominated McReynolds to the Supreme Court to succeed Lurton on August 19, 1914. He was confirmed by the Senate on August 29, 1914 by a 44-6 vote. Justice McReynolds retired on January 31, 1941 and died in 1946. Mid-vertical fold touches the "y" in McReynolds. 1¼-inch separation at upper blank margin and ¾-inch separation at lower blank margin at same mid-vertical fold. Tape stain at upper edge. Lightly creased.
