WOODROW WILSON and NEWTON D. BAKER. Partly Printed DS: "Woodrow
Wilson" as President and "Newton D. Baker" as Secretary of
War, 1p, 14½x18. Washington, 1916 August 4. Appointment of Daniel H.
Torrey as First Lieutenant of Infantry. In 1915, a year after the outbreak of
WWI in Europe, President Wilson feared that Germany might annex Denmark and its
Caribbean possession, the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands). After extended
negotiations, the United States purchased the islands from Denmark by treaty
on August 4, 1916 for $25 million, the same day Wilson signed this document.
The United States took possession of the Virgin Islands on March 31, 1917, six
days before declaring war on Germany. Military vignettes at top and bottom
center. 9½x8-inch triangular right corner area had been separated but was
expertly repaired on verso (all intact). Slightly stained lower blank margin.
Wilson's signature light but completely legible. Overall, fine condition.
