WOODROW WILSON
Thanking Judge Nott for his paper on the Constitution.
Typed Letter Signed: "Woodrow Wilson", 1p, 7¾x10¼. Princeton, New Jersey, 1901 January 24. The Princeton University Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Economy writes to Judge Charles C. Nott, Court of Claims, Washington, D.C. In full: "I am sorry that your interesting note of the nineteenth should have had to wait several days for an answer. I have been absent from home for about a week, and have only just now returned. Very I very much appreciate your thoughtful kindness in sending me your paper on 'The Immutability of the Constitution'. I had already seen and examined it with great interest. It seems to me an uncommonly thoughtful review; and I shall feel an even more direct interest in its conclusions because you have been kind enough to think of me in connection with it." A year after signing this letter, Woodrow Wilson's five volume History of the American People was published. On June 9, 1902, Wilson was unanimously elected President of Princeton. CHARLES COOPER NOTT (1827-1916) who had been appointed by President Lincoln to the U.S. Court of Claims, served for 40 years and was a prolific writer of editorials and reviews (often submitted anonymously). Nott, an active Republican who had been a friend of Lincoln, was still active when Wilson served as the Democratic Governor of New Jersey (1911-1913) and was inaugurated as the 28th U.S. President in 1913. Frayed at bottom edge. 2" horizontal tear at mid-fold. Folds, vertical fold touches "W" in Woodrow. One word ink correction. Fine condition.
